Quite Interesting

Regular readers may remember a few months ago I promised you something ‘quite interesting’ regarding the problem fireplace in the office. Well, here it is.
After the ancient fireplace and the wallpaper had been removed, you might remember it looked like this.
After a lick of paint it looked like this,
and now it looks like this. Notice the lovely, vertical ripple effect of sunshine reflected on the original, pre float glass mirror.
Now for the quite interesting bit.
We got the brass mirror on EBay (where else?) and according to the seller it came from a house in Twickenham that had previously been occupied by Alfred Lord Tennyson, from 1851 to 1853 and 100+ years later by Pete Townshend of ‘The Who’.
Before we fixed it in place we wrote a ‘billet-doux’ with this information for the person who sometime in the future removes the mirror from the wall. I have to say it was quite a surreal feeling as I put the note in place, thinking how the next person to touch it might not even have been born yet.
It fits perfectly into the space and gives the appearance of being a fireplace with mantle shelf, without actually being one and we’re very happy with the result.
A bit of ‘Googling’ soon revealed that the house it came from was ‘Chapel House’ a Grade II* listed building.
Can you imagine what it would have looked like back in the day mounted high on a wall of this Georgian style mansion. I wonder what stories it could tell and how many famous faces have stared into it?
Now that’s what I call Quite Interesting.
