Alchemy

So there we were with a brand new car and a cat problem. Having ruled out aerosol cat repellents some other method needed to be found.

We discussed various options for scaring him away, but as life-long cat lovers it was a subject we found rather difficult. Neither of us wanted to harm the cat, he was welcome in the garden any time, we just wanted him to stay off our car.

Draping the car with a cover of some kind was a non starter. Covers are slippy on a shiny surface and what do cats do when they slide? Why put their claws out of course.

Some kind of irritant powder like pepper or paprika was impractical and rather cruel. As the problem seemed to be confined to the hours of darkness, we briefly considered sitting up all night and scaring him off manually, we even discussed having doors fitted, but that would be a shame given how hard Peter had worked to design it open plan.

In desperation and with a HUGE amount of scepticism we decided to try one of those devises you see advertised in magazine supplements and so sent away for the ‘PestBye Battery Operated Waterproof Cat Repellent – Quick Fix Ultrasonic Cat Scarer’ even the name made me cringe, but what had we to loose?

Well, £14.99 actually as neither of us expected it to work.

We’d read the on-line reviews which seemed positive enough, but then they would wouldn’t they? When it arrived even the instructions said it could take several days before having any effect, our hearts sank.

But guess what? It worked immediately!! No-one could have been more surprised or pleased than we were.

We’d placed it in a position which would give maximum ‘coverage’ for the garage opening, but with as little impact elsewhere as possible, after all we had Poppy and Macbeth to consider.

The first morning we thought it must be a fluke, something else must have scared him off, but as the days turned into weeks we gradually became convinced it was working.

It is now 19 days since we installed the devise (leaned it up against the wall in the corner of the garage!) and not a single recurrence.

What is this alchemy? I’m a believer!
