At Ravendale House we built a garden from scratch. Not for the faint hearted, it was incredibly hard work, but also lots of fun.

Fast forward 17 years to ‘Grassy Bottom’, where we have taken over a well established garden created by the previous owner, Gladys, who was undoubtedly a keen gardener and accomplished plants woman.

Anzac Day 2015

Between 1942 and 1945 RAF Binbrook (which was de-commissioned in the 1990’s) was home to No.460 Squadron of the Royal Australian Air Force. Even though their stay was a short one, they have 2 memorials in the area, one on the site of the old air base and the other right opposite our house.

I Just Can’t Help It

They say that ‘great oaks from little acorns grow’ and as I’m a bit of a ‘sow it and see what happens’ kind of person, about 35 years ago I put that to the test by sowing a couple of dozen acorns.

Recycling Can Be Fun

It’s not every day you move into a property which had previously been lived in by the same person for over 50 years. We’re not of a fanciful disposition, but from the start we both agreed that Gladys’s 50 year occupancy had left an impression on the place, and we both wished we’d had the chance to meet her.

The Electric Man Cometh (with apologies to Flanders and Swan)

How hard is it to dig over a 4′ by 8′ growing bed? Well, considering that up to 2 years ago I was tending nine, 16′ by 4′ vegetable beds plus numerous flower beds, and growing all the plants from seed, the answer is ‘not very’. Particularly on a beautiful Spring morning.

One Year On

“You can paint the shower room now” said Peter helpfully. He had just finished re-instating Gladys’s bathroom mirror to it’s rightful place over the new sink, and drilling the holes ready for fitting our beloved blue glass towel rail to the side wall.
