The Electric Man Cometh (with apologies to Flanders and Swan)

How hard is it to dig over a 4′ by 8′ growing bed? Well, considering that up to 2 years ago I was tending nine, 16′ by 4′ vegetable beds plus numerous flower beds, and growing all the plants from seed, the answer is ‘not very’. Particularly on a beautiful Spring morning.

However, it’s a great deal harder when you’re being stalked by a large black and white cat.

I’ve mentioned previously how Leonard becomes quite faint at the mere mention of hard work, but that isn’t to say he doesn’t like watching other people’s efforts.

For a cat who looks like he could handle himself in a crisis, he can be quite ‘needy’, and that morning he was particularly so.

When I knelt down with a trowel he was rubbing up against me, when I was standing wielding my fork he was sitting on the bit I was trying to dig, or between my feet, or behind me. In short he was getting in the way.

We’d just about finished when Leonard made a very uncharacteristic dash round the corner of the house. (He’s built for comfort not speed.)

I followed to see what had sparked his attention. To my dismay there was a man walking down the drive with the word ‘NPower’ emblazoned across his chest. My heart sank. It’s only this week that I’ve finally got things sorted after many months of hassle.

I won’t inflict the details on you as I’m sure you’re as sick as I am of the whole issue, but if you want to remind yourself where we’d got to you can click here for a refresher.

“Morning. I’ve come to read your electricity meter” he said cheerily. “Are you going to read the gas one as well?” I asked. “No” came the response, “I only read what I’m told to.”

In a nutshell despite the fact that we have both gas and electricity from NPower, and I have recently submitted up to date readings for both, he was still going to read the meter, but only the electric one. WHY!!

Incidentally, if you’re too young to understand my title, take a look at this.
