More Rain

Once again the great British weather has dropped a spanner in the works. Although the roof trusses are here, the oak beams arrived on Monday, and the slates and other roofing paraphernalia came this morning, all hope of starting the roofing process today is a distant memory.

So I’ll start with a question.

How many men does it take to saw the end off a 9″ square, solid oak beam?

Joking apart, the 2 beams are ferociously heavy and it took three strong men all their strength to lift them from the truck, on to the scaffolding and into place over the door spaces. The off-cut, which itself is about 9″ making it a rather pleasing solid oak cube, is almost too heavy for me to lift.

Once in place, on what turned out to be a wickedly windy and cold Monday afternoon, (at least it was dry) the next courses of bricks were laid on top of the beams.

Elsewhere Leonard and I did some gardening. Actually I did the gardening while Leonard hid in one of his new favourite places,

until he felt it was safe to come out,

in easy stages.

Will it ever stop raining?
