They Think It’s All Over – – – – –

And so the England football team made it through to the quarter finals of the World Cup for the first time since 2006 by beating Columbia and what’s more they did it via a penalty shoot-out, the first one they’ve ever won in a World Cup competition.
It’s 3pm on Saturday July 7th and Sweden await. After a nervous start by both teams England found their rhythm first and won the game in some style 2-0.
The game was highly competitive, hugely entertaining and played in a good spirit, Colombia take note. The reward for this victory? A semi-final against Croatia in 4 days time.
It’s 7pm on Wednesday July 11th and England are in their first World Cup semi-final since 1990. Hopes are high, the nation awaits.
In the first half England played like everyone has always wanted them to. Attacking, confident, beautiful football and at half time were 1-0 in front, though in fact they should have been at least 3-0 with the chances they missed.
I don’t know what happened at the break, but in the second half they were like a different team, or perhaps I should say, the same team ie. the one we are used to watching, lacking confidence and imagination. Needless to say Croatia equalised.
For the second time extra time and penalties loomed, but having been there with Columbia a week ago, it didn’t seem as scary. Trouble is, unlike Colombia, Croatia scored again and it was all downhill after that.
The hardest thing for me is the fact that it was a match we should have won, we were undoubtedly the better team, such a wasted opportunity.
So England are out of the World Cup, they just have one last game against Belgium to settle 3rd and 4th places. It was great fun while it lasted and lifted the spirits of the country at a time when we could all do with some ‘good’ news.
This new, young, England team did us proud and will no doubt do so again. Their conduct both on and off the pitch was exemplary.
They think it’s all over – – – – it is (for) now.
