007 Remembered

When you’ve been married to the same person for 43 years the opportunities to surprise each other are a bit thin on the ground. I probably stopped surprising Peter after 43 days, now I just shock him occasionally, but not in a good way!

He, however, never ceases to amaze me. Take the other day for example.

We were watching a lunchtime politics programme (you can have too much of Bargain Hunt!) when one of the contributors used the word ‘happenstance’.

Definition: ‘something that happens by chance’.

I had heard the word before, but commented that it wasn’t a word you heard every day. Imagine my surprise when Peter replied that he believed it had been used by Ian Fleming in the book (not the film) ‘Goldfinger’.

Now it’s situations like this where t’internet (sorry, just had a Peter Kay moment) the internet really comes into it’s own, and guess what? He’s right.

“Once is happenstance. Twice is coincidence. Three times, it’s enemy action.” (Auric Goldfinger)

I have no recollection of him reading the book, so I guess it must have been before my time i.e. over 43 years ago. How can that still be in his head? It takes me all my time to remember what I had for tea yesterday.

Moving on. For those who might be wondering how Leonard is at the moment I am pleased to report he has just had 3 very good weeks. He’s run and jumped and misbehaved, exactly as it should be.

He helped me with painting the gates the other day and here you can see him trying to decide where to take his afternoon nap.
