Spring Dream Summer Nightmare
Posted By Judith on 30th May 2017
My Spring bulb flower border that brings me so much joy at the beginning of the year is fast turning into a nightmare. It needs weeding.
“That shouldn’t be a problem for a seasoned gardener like you” I hear you cry, but in fact it’s not the weeding that’s the problem, it’s the ants.
The entire bed is infested and I mean INFESTED by brown ants and they’re the ones that bite.
In gardening, as in life, I’m pretty much a ‘live and let live’ kind of person and don’t like killing things (with the exception of Tineola bisselliella) but I might have to make another exception for ants. Though having done a quick Internet search it might be a tall order, particularly if I don’t want to harm other things.
I’m not normally squeamish about creepy crawlies in the garden but I do object to being eaten alive. I’ve tried several times to weed through the discomfort, but I just can’t do it.
Am I a wimp? Well let’s put it this way, I was going to include a picture of one of the little blighters in this piece and made the mistake of browsing images of ants and their bites on Google.
O.M.G! Worse case scenarios no doubt and a lot won’t even be in the UK, but having seen them I’m proud to be a wimp!
