No Need For Speed

Last Thursday we had a bit of excitement in Binbrook, a police speed trap, but this wasn’t any ordinary speed trap.
Two of the main roads through the village, which have a 30 mph speed limit, have been causing concern for some time and various methods have been tried in recent months to deter speeding drivers.
The two roads in question are the ones that run each side of our house, (we’re on a corner plot) and are one of the reasons getting another cat at some point is a harder decision than it should be. In addition one of these roads runs past the local school.
I was pottering in the garden when I noticed a crocodile of hi-viz jackets walking along the road and stopping on the corner where the two roads meet, just opposite our garden.
It consisted of 2 police officers, a teacher and several excited children. They had one of those hand held speed guns and having settled themselves in place I could hear shouts of glee and ’31’, ’35’, ’33’ along with disappointed shouts of ‘awe 29’.
I don’t know if the errant drivers were actually pulled over and cautioned or not but anything that teaches children in a fun way about road safety and the dangers of speeding has to be a good thing. It might also have taught a few drivers a timely lesson too.
I should probably own up here and say that I got caught for speeding back in 2001. It was a Saturday morning in May and the electric lawn mower had just died. We were on our way to Scunthorpe to buy a new one. It should have cost us £85 but ended up as £145 with the fine, plus 3 points on my licence. An expensive lesson, which I’ve never forgotten.
Finally, I’ll leave you with this slightly tenuous link, a notion that Peter came up with whilst watching the Chancellors Autumn Statement last week. It went something like this.
I knew the BBC was wrong to sack Clarkson, it’s left Hammond and May running the country.
Now there’s a scary thought!!
