Another Sunflower Story
Posted By Judith on 7th July 2016
Avid readers of my previous blog might remember ‘A Tale of Two Sunflowers’, well here’s another sunflower story.
At the end of last year, after watching an episode of ‘Gardeners’ World’, I bought a packet of ‘Munchkin’ sunflower seeds.
A few months ago I sowed all 20 and 14 of them germinated. Not a brilliant percentage, but just about acceptable.
At the end of May I planted them into a flower bed.
Despite being treated exactly the same and planted in the same flower bed only about 8′ apart, they have fared quite differently, mainly due to the attentions of the local snail population, who have obviously spent the last 6 weeks quietly munching away at my ‘Munchkins’.
Here are the 2 extremes.
This poor little soldier has been eaten to within an inch of his life, I doubt if he will survive,
whilst this chap is vigorous and healthy, exactly what a sunflower should be.
As for the rest of them, well they’re somewhere in between. If we ever get any ‘summer’ I might even get a flower on one of them.
Shed doors should have been delivered yesterday but weren’t. Hey-ho!!
More gravel news will follow shortly.
