Goddess

I think it would be fair to say that my name and the word ‘Goddess’ have rarely, if indeed ever, appeared in the same sentence. Though strangely I was called a ‘Goddess’ by the children last week as I pushed them on a roundabout in the local park?!?!

However, be in no doubt, and as people who know me will testify, I am definitely not a ‘Goddess’ in the kitchen, so it came as a surprise to them as well as me, when I decided, with a certain amount of trepidation, to try my hand at baking.

I was really doing it for the children, so we had planned the ‘great unveiling’ for Friday teatime after school.

I decided to approach it like a decorating project, firstly assemble all your ingredients. (The Easter chicken got included because I hadn’t got round to putting him away.)

And your tool(s).

The children like chocolate so I’d chosen chocolate butterfly buns with chocolate buttercream filling topped with white chocolate buttons and ‘hundreds and thousands’ for my first foray into the world of baking.

My recipe of choice courtesy of the national treasure that is Mary Berry. What could possibly go wrong?

Now here’s the thing.

I have written these opening paragraphs 2 days before the actual event so at this point have no idea how it will turn out.

Triumph or disaster?

I hope I can at least live up to Kipling’s expectations. (That would be Rudyard, not Mister!!)

So Friday morning arrived. I’d remembered to take my butter out of the fridge the night before, and so I began.

So far so good, (I think the Easter chicken might become my baking mascot)

but if this becomes a regular thing I’ll need to buy some new weighing scales. My current ones are calibrated in Sanskrit, try converting that to grams!!

I decorated them with white chocolate buttons and hundreds and thousands. I let what artistic talent I have run free, but they still looked like they’d been done by a 5-year-old, though I did manage to top 2 of them with the letter ‘R’, which the children seemed to appreciate.

I got out my best table cloth and served them with lemonade in wine glasses.

The children gave me 10 out of 10.

Eat your heart out Nigella!!
