1966 And All That (with apologies to Craig Brown)
Posted By Judith on 11th June 2016
Yesterday saw the start of UEFA Euro 2016 in France. For the next month non football fans hide behind the sofa and pray for it all to be over, whilst the rest of us long suffering supporters, who have high hopes of the young England team, hide behind the sofa for different reasons.
Whilst the faithful travel to Marseille for England’s first match, more in hope than expectation (non of the BBC pundits think England will win the competition) here at ‘Grassy Bottom’ preparations for the tournament are complete.
As the England squad prepare for the battles ahead, I can’t help thinking back to 1966, the year when England won the World Cup.
Can you remember it? I can. Apart from the match itself, my abiding memory of the day is walking to the local sweet shop at half time and noticing how deserted the streets were.
Here’s another question. Can you also remember what you looked like back then? Well, thanks to my Canadian pen-pal who for some reason has kept this photo for 50 years (!) I can.
Viewers of a nervous disposition should look away now!
There are no words.
And finally, for no other reason than I think it’s a sweet picture, here is a photo I took of a wood pigeon in the bird bath.
Come on England!!
