A New Car

Posted By on 30th March 2017

On Thursday March 16th we set off for Cambridge to collect our new MX5. Buying a car ‘long distance’ is quite easy with modern technology, but it isn’t without it’s worries and we were both apprehensive (for different reasons) as we pulled out of the drive at 9am.

Having consulted the map we had decided to go via Newark and the A1. We’ve been to Newark several times so that part of the journey was familiar. The A1 however wasn’t. Two lanes of fast moving heavy lorries is not my idea of fun, but at least we’d given ourselves plenty of time to get there for noon, so I had no need to hurry.

The A1(M)was slightly better as it had four lanes and the A14 into Cambridge was OK and we only got lost once trying to find the dealership, where we arrived with 10 minutes to spare.

It took an hour for the ‘hand-over’ even though most of the paperwork had already been done.

Here it is our lovely new Mazda MX5 ‘Arctic’.

For those of a technical persuasion, it’s 1.5 litre engine will do 47 mpg. and provides as much ‘oomph’ as the ‘old’ car which was a 1.8.

We decided the return journey would be less stressful without the A1 and so came home via Ely, Wisbech and Boston.

When we first moved to Lincolnshire people had said to me ‘Isn’t it all flat?’ and certainly some of it is around the Boston Fens, but the Fens around Cambridge seemed even flatter, if such a thing is possible, which made driving a bit tedious after a while.

However, we entertained ourselves by watching the sat nav (we’ve never had a sat nav before) display the names of all the streets and roads as we drove by them, without any intervention from us. (Our prime objective was to get home safely using road signs, a method that has served us well for 40+ years).

Even the smallest lane between two fields seemed to get a mention, it was very impressive, and as we arrived home I was actually disappointed that the screen didn’t display ‘Grassy Bottom’!!

Home safe and sound in time for tea, what could possibly go wrong now?
