Signs

After the excitement of Monday, week 17 settled down into lots of sitting around in the garden doing nothing (well the sun was shining and we deserve a rest!) and finished with a nice surprise.

There are really only 2 outstanding issues now, the mahogany up-stand for the new sink and the return of stand-up Steve to mend the leaking radiator. Rather palindromic don’t you think?

Then on Friday morning we had 2 ‘signs’. It started when a truck pulled up by the house out of which emerged 2 council operatives complete with hard hats and hi-viz jackets. ‘What’s going on here?’ we wondered.

We didn’t have long to wait as they turned their attention to the street sign on the corner, and one of them began to clean it while the other watched. Well, I say clean, he just waved a damp cloth at the bottom right hand corner, but to be fair, from a distance, we could see the years of road grime begin to slowly disappear.

However, that was it. The pair stood back to admire his handy work on the right hand corner, got back in the truck, and left.

What’s that about? Was that it? Is this what I pay my council tax for?

Anyway, before I get too bitter and twisted, I’ll tell you about the second sign. Indeed it was the arrival of our new house sign.

The remit had been simple. ‘Big Lincolnshire sky with a grassy bottom’.
They did rather well don’t you think?

On Saturday we had an un-expected visit from Rod, an old friend from Halifax. He had been to Lincoln with his daughter to check out the University, and they decided to call in on their way home to check out the alterations in person.

Apparently he’s been following our progress on the website, so at least I haven’t been talking to myself for the last 17 weeks!

It was good to see them, but I have to say, we’re not quite ready to receive visitors just yet, as they discovered.

Nevertheless we spent a pleasant hour sitting in the garden despite the attentions of the thrips, or thunder flies, as they’re called in these parts. I bet Rod and Helen are still itching when they get back to Yorkshire.
